Maybe it’s because I “do hair”, but I am always mystified by people who love high-end fashion but then shop for a bargain haircut. It doesn’t make sense to spend a fortune on great designer dresses and boots, which you wear every so often, and then try to save on a haircut, which you “wear” every day.  Here’s why you shouldn’t cut corners when it comes to your hair.

In the current climate of inflation, we all love to save where we can.  Whether it’s fueling up at a gas station that charges a few cents less per gallon or finding your favorite ice cream on a 2-for-1 sale at the local market, every little bit helps, right? But there is one place you should never look for a bargain – and that’s at your hair salon!

A good haircut takes time and attention.

Let’s be honest. Salons that offer bargain haircuts depend on volume, meaning they need to tend to as many heads as possible in the shortest amount of time. They offer quick service but you get ‘cookie cutter’ styling. A stylist who has to hurry your cut in order to make his or her quota for the day probably does not have the time to give you the kind of quality haircut that you will get from a creative stylist in a high-end salon that offers customized styling. This kind of stylist will spend all the time necessary in order to craft that perfect look, just for you.

Good haircuts begin with one vital step (and it has nothing to do with scissors!) Before ever taking scissors to your hair, it’s crucial to have an initial consultation with your stylist.  A top hairstylist will talk with you honestly- and, more importantly, listen – in order to learn about your lifestyle, your activities, hair care routines, and preferences. He or she will take stock of your hair type, hair condition, face shape, skin tones and other physical features that will determine what styles will work best for you. You’ll immediately feel the difference between a stylist at those “fast hair” salons and a hairstylist who takes the time to listen and gives you the attention you deserve.

The “best” price doesn’t always equal the best service.

Having your stylist really get to know you and your hair and work with you to consistently achieve the look you want is priceless.  A great haircut will never reach its potential without guidance and direction from your stylist. There’s so much to learn about tools, products, styling techniques, maintenance, and conditioning, plus knowing how to complement the cut with hair color and makeup. This is why we recommend asking yourself “Am I getting the best for the price I pay?”

Here’s what you can expect from a good salon:

  • Consultation with a stylist before any service
  • Customized styling, no “cookie cutter” cuts
  • Personal attention to details to make it perfect
  • Stylists up-to-date on latest techniques and trends
  • Master tips on how to get certain texture and styling effects

Remember, a good haircut is one of the best investments you can make in your appearance. The quality of the cut is a culmination of the stylist’s experience, expertise, skills, training, and creative vision. Once you put that into perspective, you will know that you’re really getting what you pay for!
